I got some new inks yesterday ( they are fresh so look a little sore!) The one on my hand is an extension and was originally on the side only....one tip-finger tattoos HURT!!!-but it was worth it . I LOVE this beauty, even more than I did before I added the extra bits!!! :)
The dragonfly-well, it was a reaction not everyone will understand, to recent events and signifies to me-amongst other things-the brevity and preciousness of our fragile lives.
My beautiful daughter rolled her car last weekend ( simple mistake on a country lane in the rain...) but came away with only minor injuries.
That alone has to be the late night call any parent dreads and when I saw what was left of her car later this week I felt the shock twice over, I do not know how she could have walked away from it.
For that I am forever grateful - and to the people who happened by and offered aid and called for help, blessings always.Am taking a BIG reality check here!
Cherish every moment lovely people, you never know when it might get snatched away-thank you for listening to me share!

This album was created using fabrics and papers with stitchery and vintage image embellishments. The style is very much grunge/shabby chic,with layers of yummy fabrics and papers,raw and torn edges and uncut threads-do not assume from this design style that it is loosely stitched however, it is firmly finished,and whilst designed to fray,the edges have been finished to prevent too much unravelling-it is very much designed to be handled!
There are six pages, not including the front cover entitled 'Play' and back cover embellished with lace and embroidery,filled with scrummy tags,handmade using papers,beads,fibres and all manner of stitch and fabrics,tucked into pockets,the sweetest minature embroidered fabric booklet ( see photos-embroidered 'Play,Smile,Laugh,Love ) , even a touch of tricksy freehand embroidery design-and still plenty of space ready for you to add all your precious mementos,letters and photos to create a personal album!
Album measure ROUGHLY 6" square and approx 1" thick.
I'm not sure that my photos do it justice!It is hard to convey the textural appeal of these lovely fabrics. A great deal of care and time was spent creating it and this lovely book is extremely tactile and appealing this would make a wonderful gift filled with mementos from a special occasion,or a fabulous memories journal or scrapbook - it's begging to be crammed full of extras and goodies and could inspire all types of new creativity!

I could hardly wait to share these-although the photos hardly do them full justice, they look FANTASTIC on!

Inspirational Afternoon!

Too many hours spent at the studio work desk this week really-I have been burning the midnight oil a little too long...today was a fantastic balance to it all,spent walking, feeding ducks, swans and even squirrels by hand at Tehidy woods....just beautiful!
Exactly what I needed to re-charge my batteries after such a busy few weeks-these photos are a wonderful memory of such a great few hours,totally relaxed and chilled and leave me feeling so inspired....I hope you enjoy them too :)

One of my colleagues saw the state of my scribbled on hands the other day and swore he would get me organised and buy me a pack of those sticky note thingys- but I actually really hope he was joking, because I never, ever got the hang of them.....I just lose them...or launder them...or leave the pad somewhere else when I need it HERE...and anyway,those little stubby pads? ugh, no! Just so uncomfortable to write on!
I quite like the challenge of deciphering my scrawls before showering when I get home from the studio anyways :)
This was quite a good day-only one palm's worth of notes!

New Art for Spring at Seiners in Perranporth.

Seiners Hotel, Bar and Restaurant in Perranporth is starting the new season with a fresh exhibition of local art. The launch night is open to everyone and features music provided by the soulful folk songs of Pippa Williams. The opening will be held on Saturday 6th February from 7.00p.m and features six emerging artists from Cornwall. The exhibition will be on display until April throughout Seiners.

The exhibition promises to be an eclectic mix of genres and mediums representing an array of local talent:

Camilla Dixon came to live in the raw open space of coastal North Cornwall from the chaotic Southern Italian city of Naples in 2004. The extreme contrast of environment necessitated a major change in medium: after ten years of working in collage she turned to oil paint.

Sue Young invites the viewer to explore her work's tactile as well as visual qualities and draws endless inspirations from the Cornish beaches and countryside. Powerful scenery provides a deeply inspiring backdrop to ancient myth and legend throughout this beautiful county and gives a sense of magic and mystery which influences the work. She combines textile techniques with paint and collage, carefully drawn together to create a unique and personal world of wonderment!

Through her work Traci Watts explores her relationship to the paint she uses by manipulating it in various ways. She is particularly interested in how different mark-making techniques affect the attitude of the paint. Colour also plays a big role in Traci's work as well as in her life in general. She has become an expert at mixing paint to make the exact colour that she wishes to use, often creating ultra vibrant shades which enchant and surprise the viewer.

Tina Carewilloughby's work develops from ideas of escape into local natural areas –beaches, woods and also the safety of home. She is inspired by the way nature employs strategies to continue its path in the face of adversity; she uses this philosophy towards life every day.

Born in St. Ives Sam Bassett went on to study at Falmouth College of Arts and The Arts Institute Bournemouth. His recent works are a reflection on personal events, using fragments of conversation, memories and thoughts. The artist creates a hub of activity from words and images, which are often overridden in a very intuitive way with fresh thoughts as his paintings are worked into.

Paul Tomline is a photographer from Cornwall who works in a black and white classic style. His photographs present Cornwall as a dramatic and distinct landscape, full of possibility.

The Seiners Hotel, Restaurant and Bar is proud to present up and coming artists from around Cornwall and is a beautiful setting for the regions cultural talent. Come on down on Saturday 6th February from 7pm for an evening of art and music on the beachfront in Perranporth. Oh my! Just had to show off a few of these! A very dear friend of mine has recently finished a Masters Degree in Textile Design.....and is now taking off a few (well deserved)months to go travelling.
This being the case she is downsizing many of her possessions and selling off many of her wordly goods....so when it came to her collection of TOTALLY UNIQUE NEVER TO BE SEEN AGAIN DIGITALLY DESIGNED AND PRINTED FABRICS-well, her first thought when looking for a good home for these wonderful creations so precious to her heart,was to speak to yours truly right here of course!
These are AMAZING-this is just a handful of examples that I snapped whilst sorting through them....I don't have the words to express my joy and inspiration at this amazing collection.
As an artist and designer I admire this lady's work so so much and have been lucky enough to peek in and see how some of these design have developed along the way-and to NOW have the chance to use and create with some of her fabrics, well....INSPIRATIONS are overflowing here!!!
The only drawback this week is that I have to put the ideas on hold ( I am surgically attached to my sketchpad/notepad so as not to lose any of the ideas buzzing here in the meantime) whilst I get ready for an exhibition beginning this weekend-exciting enough in itself really! Further details on that to follow tomorrow....meanwhile...enjoy the little teasers-I am!

Love my sewing machines,truly,....each one has a special place in my heart,it's own certain strengths and weaknesses....I have an old,old metal Singer (electric,so not antique for any of you who are interested) which can no longer wind it's own bobbins and is SO HEAVY-but it will sew through anything from paper to vilene and runs smoothly with a perfect stitch, even threaded with sparkly Indian embroidery threads that no other machine can stitch further then 2cm without snarling and snapping-what a hero,worth keeping around just for that.I have a friendly,cheap modern machine which is reserved for experimental projects that might damage a more delicate motor-this one could not sound any worse that it does already,but it rattles through all kinds of weird stuff.
I ADORE my overlocker (serger, I think,for U.S. visitors) for it's efficiency and speed,though I must confess I am STILL getting to know it after 7 years and still have to keep the manual handy at times!
My pride and joy is a high-range computerised Brother ( scary £££££s but worth every bit)-it offers SO much,I never cease to be amazed at it's skills .... if only it made tea as well and my life would be complete :)
The only issue I suffer from time to time is that the more a machine can do,the more fussy it is that you do it RIGHT -fine if you are prepared (not really my style!)and know what your project needs and have plenty of time for fine adjustments, but for me,when the muse strikes,I tend to work fast,instinctively and with a vast range of fabrics and threads. It hates me when I do that :( It spits at metallics.... Coughs at fluffy fabrics.... and today it growled to a complete halt and stated on-screen 'safety mechanism activated' Did I know it could say that? Erm, no. The good thing about that function is that it stops you from messing up the machine by sewing when it might hurt it...told you it was clever didn't I? Not to be outsmarted, I fiddled,cleaned,faffed and generally overhauled the situation until things ran smoothly again....then I opened the window and let out the colourful vocabulary which accompanied this delay. We are now friends again....and my stitching does NOT make a grinding sound and look like this photo any more,which is GOOD news...although my inspiration has evaporated and I have nothing else to show you until tomorrow.....

Book is filled with all manner of stitch and fabrics,inspirational/mantra style words and a couple pages have tiny pockets for some of my handmade tags .
I have included lots of photos so the page may take a moment or two to load but is well worth it! Album measures ROUGHLY 3" square and approx just less than 2" or so thick

I have an idea for another art doll in development....here are the beginning photos, I will post more as she comes to life!
She begins in strong white cotton.....and is sponge dyed by hand after stuffing into shape.

Part of a special order for a very special lady this is a scrummy treasure box made entirely from stitch and textiles,and will provide a seat for an art doll figure who will keep further arty treasures inside...more photos to follow soon....a truly intricate and tactile piece this has to be one of my favourites to date!

Fowey Show....

I am so proud to be exhibiting this weekend at Fowey Show once again. Now in it's 5th year, this is a highly prestigious show which is very well supported and attracts visitr's from all over the world. The whole of this gorgeously picturesque fishing town gets involved-carparks are free and there are shuttle buses from all of the venues running every 15 minutes if you don't fancy the stroll-although I have to say this is such a pretty place I love to stroll the old fashioned streets, expecially when all the shops and buildings are decorated for Christmas!. Carefully selected local artists (including yours truly) and craftsmen sell a huge range of handmade unique gift items along with Cornish food traders, Carol singers and thousands of visitors. If you are in Cornwall this weekend this show is NOT to be missed! Come along and say hi!
